Call to Action

The placing of an image in either the top right or left will force the initial few lines of the post to shorten in length. The fewer characters per line have a psychological effect on how we view the post. Less characters infers that the text is easy to understand and less complex.

If you do not like to have highlighted images, there is an alternative way to achieve few characters per line and that is by increasing the font size of the introductory paragraph.

Subheadings

Because we are constantly bombard with information the majority of us just scan, so setting up your blog post to be scan able is without question a vital component of a perfect post.

Having subheading allows for the content to be scanned. Heading tags (basically the size of the font for the heading) indicates the content's importance to both the reader and the search engines. The most prominent line is the headline, so that gets an H1, then subheadings get H2 and so on.

How Much Content is Enough

So you have written a captivating headline that gets people interested, included a storyline to hook them to go further on in the post and formatted in the correct way to guide the reader. What do you do about the content?

There are typically two questions to answer with regards to content and creating the perfect post.

1. How long should it be?

2. What should it look like?

Most posts achieve a better engagement when they reach a certain number of words. A blog post of 1,500 words or more are inclined to receive more shares. Research has shown that the longer the post the more shares the post got and that the bare minimum number of words should be 700.

It is inevitable, that with longer content come the need to make the post more scan able and with only 28% of words actually being read, subheadings are a brilliant way of making the content scan able, so that the readers can find what they want.

Here are few things you can do to help the reader viewing your content.

• Lists - bullet points

• Quotes

• Bolded text

• Short paragraphs

• Images/ infographics

Sharing is Caring

Try and make your post as quotable and shareable as you possibly can. These "tweetables" can tend to go viral on Twitter. To encourage these tweetables, highlight content you have written and add "tweet this" or "share this" next to the text. Make the content more noticeable so that the reader can rapidly see what to share.

There are plugins to help you with this i.e. click to tweet.

Finishing Touch

Now that we have cover the main elements for creating the prefect post but there are a few things you can do to refine it even further.

Call to Action

Call to action can be placed in a number of places on the blog post - header, footer and sidebar are the most obvious and also the text itself with internal links. Links are a normal part of blog posts and a study of high ranking blog posts indicated that the average links inside each post was nearly 10.

Visual Content

Visual content has become very important in today's blogs and is recognised as one of the key factors to a successful post. It is suggested that you have a visual image for every 350 words.

Social Media Share

In order to raise awareness of your blog content it needs to be share. So you need to make it as easy as possible for the reader to do this. You can achieve this by including share buttons.
